Not long ago, I researched internet rumors, that common childhood vaccines could be linked to the development of autism in children. Here is what I learned when I addressed the issue with Dr. Christian Heesch.
“From the outset, let me make it clear that I am not a pediatrician or vaccine researcher,” Dr. Christian Heesch stated. “Nonetheless, I can say categorically that there is no causal connection between vaccines routinely administered to children in the United States, and the development of autism. Any occurrences of autism are unrelated.”
“Parents need to keep in mind that childhood diseases such as mumps or chickenpox are not always benign,” Dr. Christian Heesch told me. In fact, in some children there are complications. In the past, I have attended to children in a part of the world where vaccine programs had not been fully established. I have seen children and adults die of complicated measles – very sad, especially in view of the fact that this would have been preventable had these patients received the vaccines available to us in the United States.”
“It is very difficult for people without a medical background to get through all the information and pseudo-information that is available on the web,” Dr. Christian Heesch believes. “Good information, however, is the only basis that can lead to good decision making. In that regard, I suggest that people look at the information available through the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/vaccines Some very helpful general information for parents on vaccine related issues is available at www.mayoclinic.org/healthy.../infant-and-toddler-health/.../.. Lastly, I recently saw an interesting historical overview of the vaccine related discussions that have taken place in this country at www.wsj.com/.../the-return-of-the-vaccine-wars-...,”
